In-Cart Product Recommendations: Your Highest-Intent Upsell Moment

Most upsell advice focuses on the product page or a post-purchase page. Both work, but they miss the moment with the most buying intent of all: the cart. A shopper looking at their cart has already decided to spend money. The only open question is how much.

That's what makes in-cart recommendations so effective — and also why they're so easy to get wrong.

Relevance beats volume

A recommendation only helps if it feels like a natural companion to what's already in the cart. A shopper buying a camera might genuinely want a memory card or a case. They almost certainly don't want a random bestseller from an unrelated category.

Good in-cart recommendations follow a few rules:

  • Complement, don't compete. Suggest accessories, refills, or pairings — not alternatives that make the shopper second-guess the item they already chose.
  • Keep the price proportional. An add-on that costs a fraction of the cart total is an easy yes. An add-on that doubles the total invites hesitation.
  • Limit the choices. One or two well-chosen suggestions convert better than a wall of options. More choices mean more deliberation, and deliberation at checkout is where sales stall.

Make adding effortless

The mechanics matter as much as the selection. If accepting a recommendation means leaving the cart, viewing a product page, and re-adding, most shoppers won't bother.

The best in-cart upsells let the customer add the suggested item with a single tap, right inside the drawer, without losing their place. The cart total updates, and they continue toward checkout. Friction removed, decision made.

Curated or automatic?

There are two ways to decide what to show:

  1. Manual pairings give you full control — you choose exactly which product to suggest alongside which items. This is ideal when you know your catalog's natural bundles.
  2. Automatic recommendations use store data to surface likely companions without manual setup, which scales better across a large catalog.

Many stores use a blend: hand-picked pairings for their hero products, automatic suggestions everywhere else.

The compounding effect on AOV

In-cart recommendations don't just add a one-time bump. Because they raise average order value on every qualifying order, the effect compounds across your entire volume. A modest attach rate on a well-priced add-on, applied to thousands of orders, is one of the cleanest ways to grow revenue without spending more on traffic.

The traffic you've already paid for is sitting in the cart. Recommending the right next product is simply making the most of it.
